INEC Launches Massive Security Operation Ahead of Ekiti 2026 Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission has commenced an intensive three-day training workshop for Election Security Personnel (ESP) as preparations intensify for the June 20, 2026, governorship election in Ekiti State.

The strategic workshop, which began on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the Hassanat Event Centre in Ado-Ekiti, brought together security operatives from all 16 Local Government Areas of the state under the umbrella of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).

The training forms part of INEC’s broader efforts to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and violence-free off-cycle governorship election widely expected to attract national attention.

According to election officials, participants are undergoing specialized sessions on election security management, intelligence gathering, crowd control, conflict prevention, professionalism, neutrality, and compliance with Nigeria’s Electoral Act.

Addressing participants at the opening ceremony, Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye Michael, urged security personnel to approach the training with utmost seriousness, stressing that the credibility and success of the election would depend heavily on their preparedness and conduct.

“The knowledge and skills acquired during this training will not only improve election security operations but will also contribute positively to your overall professional development,” the police commissioner stated.

Also speaking at the event, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ekiti State, Bunmi Omoseyidemi, expressed confidence in the ability of security agencies to maintain peace and stability throughout the electoral process.

Omoseyidemi emphasized that adequate security remains essential for democratic participation, noting that voters, political parties, and election officials must be able to carry out their activities without fear or intimidation.

“A secure environment is critical for political parties to campaign freely, for voters to exercise their rights peacefully, and for election officials to perform their duties without fear or intimidation,” the REC said.

She further highlighted the importance of inter-agency collaboration, intelligence sharing, early identification of potential flashpoints, and strict adherence to professional rules of engagement.

INEC disclosed that the training would be replicated across multiple operational levels to ensure that all security personnel deployed for the election are fully equipped to maintain law and order while respecting citizens’ rights and democratic principles.

Political observers say the early security preparations reflect growing efforts by the electoral commission to avoid violence, voter intimidation, and operational lapses that have affected previous elections in parts of the country.

The June 20 governorship election is expected to be one of Nigeria’s most closely watched off-cycle polls, with political parties already intensifying grassroots mobilization across the state.

INEC officials and security agencies are expected to roll out additional voter sensitization programmes, simulation exercises, and operational briefings in the coming weeks as the countdown to the election continues.

The commission reiterated its commitment to delivering a free, fair, and credible election in line with international best practices and democratic standards.
