Calls for Equity, Climate Justice, and Youth-Centered Development for Africa and Emerging Economies

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made a bold call for the reevaluation of the global governance structure, financial systems, and healthcare frameworks during his speech at the 17th BRICS Summit held on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Addressing leaders of the Global South and emerging economies, President Tinubu urged the international community to urgently prioritize equity, climate justice, and inclusive development, particularly for Africa and low-income nations, which continue to bear the brunt of global challenges despite contributing the least to their causes.

“Africa has contributed the least to global emissions but suffers the most,” President Tinubu emphasized, calling attention to the stark environmental and healthcare inequalities facing the continent.

The Nigerian President, who was invited to the summit by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, affirmed Nigeria’s alignment with BRICS’ vision for fair and collective global development. He stressed the need for financial restructuring, debt relief, accessible funding for clean energy, and stronger South-South cooperation.

“The next issues are financial restructuring and reevaluation of the global structure,” he declared.

President Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to climate action and sustainable development through key initiatives such as the African Carbon Market Initiative and the Great Green Wall. He also expressed hope that the upcoming COP-30 Climate Conference will accelerate global cooperation in tackling environmental and healthcare disparities.

“We must be the architects of a future that addresses the specific needs and concerns of our youths, who represent 70% of Nigeria’s population,” Tinubu stated.

Nigeria officially joined BRICS as a partner country in January 2025, alongside Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. The partner-country status was introduced at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia.

As part of his speech, President Tinubu called on BRICS to move beyond economic cooperation and become a global beacon of solutions rooted in solidarity, self-reliance, sustainability, and the shared prosperity of a common future.

“We believe BRICS must not only be a bloc for emerging economies but also a beacon for emerging solutions,” he noted.

He further called for universal health coverage, improved access to healthcare infrastructure, and a united front in tackling non-communicable diseases across developing nations.

President Tinubu was accompanied to the summit by Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Wale Edun, Minister of Finance.

His presence at the summit is being widely regarded as a strategic move to position Nigeria at the forefront of global discussions on financial justice, climate resilience, and inclusive healthcare reform.
