Greek betting giant Betano is facing intense backlash in Nigeria after reports emerged that the platform is allegedly refusing to pay out hundreds of millions of naira in winnings to lucky bettors.

One player, Hannah Dixon (a male operating under a pseudonymous account), claims he won a jaw-dropping ₦310 million after staking just ₦4,000 on 10,000 and 1,800 odds. Despite previously withdrawing ₦1 million without issues, Dixon says Betano has now blocked his larger withdrawals with endless verification requests.

According to him, a ₦20 million withdrawal request has been pending since Sunday, never credited back after cancellation, while even a ₦100,000 attempt failed. To make matters worse, Betano has restricted him from placing new bets.

“My account is verified, I’ve withdrawn before. Now they’re frustrating me with new verifications. If they don’t pay, I’m ready to sue,” Dixon said.

The situation has stirred controversy online, with Dixon posting what he claimed was proof of a ₦310 million payout. However, many betting influencers dismissed the evidence as a PR stunt, calling it a suspicious screenshot of a screenshot. Some even suggest he may have cut a private deal with Betano.

A deeper look into Betano’s terms and conditions reveals a worrying clause: under Rule 1.3, the company reserves the right to withhold payouts for any reason whatsoever—a policy critics say leaves players defenseless.

This isn’t the first time Nigerian bettors have faced such frustration. In a past case, Sportybet allegedly withheld a ₦1 million win, branding it “money laundering” and forcing the bettor to replay odds until he lost it all.

Meanwhile, the original game source, DaveSmart, reportedly won just ₦8 million, but industry insiders estimate that the total payout across players who staked on the slip could exceed ₦1 billion.

Though Betano has urged winners to be “patient,” confidence in the platform is eroding fast, with many calling for tighter regulation of betting companies in Nigeria.
