After days of mounting public pressure and widespread online protests, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially confirmed the arrest of social media activist and outspoken commentator, VeryDarkMan.
In a statement issued by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the agency disclosed that the controversial figure was taken into custody following multiple petitions lodged against him. Though details of the petitions remain undisclosed, Oyewale stated that the commission is “investigating serious allegations” and that VeryDarkMan will be charged to court if he fails to meet his bail conditions.
“He is currently in custody and may be released on bail once he fulfills the conditions. If not, we will proceed with legal charges,” the EFCC spokesperson said.
The arrest has sparked a nationwide outcry, with tens of thousands rallying online under the #FreeVDM hashtag. Supporters have accused the EFCC of overreach and demanded a transparent process, especially in light of reports alleging he was detained without formal charges for several days.
The controversy intensified amid silence from both the EFCC and other involved institutions, leading to speculation, viral misinformation, and even threats of protests in major cities.
With voices from across political, entertainment, and civil rights circles joining the call for clarity, the EFCC’s official statement is being seen as a first step in quelling the storm — but it may not be enough to calm a public demanding full transparency and accountability.
