Shehu Aliyu Shagari, Nigeria’s first democratically elected president is dead. He died Friday at the National
Governor Aminu Tambuwal of his home state of Sokoto announced the demise by the former president on his
Shagari, a former teacher who later got elected into the federal House of Representatives held different ministerial offices between 1958 and 1971, ruled Nigeria between 1979 and 1983. He was removed from office in a coup led by Muhammadu Buhari, then a General in the Nigerian Army (now president of the federal republic of Nigeria).
Though placed under house arrest while the military government probed most second republic politicians for corruption , Shagari was never accused of corrupt practice by the military.
He however stayed out of active politics since that coup, choosing to stick to farming.
He was 93 years old.
