Panic and outrage have swept across parts of Oyo State after heavily armed gunmen stormed three schools in Oriire Local Government Area, killing a teacher and abducting a school principal, dozens of pupils, teachers, and a nursing mother in a coordinated daytime attack.

The brazen assault, which occurred on Friday, May 15, targeted Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School in Esiele (also known as Esinele), and L.A. Primary School, leaving residents in shock and sparking renewed concerns over the safety of schools in rural communities.

Victims of the attack included assistant headmaster Mr. Joel Adesiyan, who was reportedly shot dead during the invasion. Among those abducted was Mrs. Rachael Alamu, principal of Community High School, Esinele, alongside approximately 45 pupils, teachers, and other residents.

The attackers, said to be riding motorcycles and armed with dangerous weapons, reportedly forced their victims into nearby forests linked to the Old Oyo National Park area shortly after the attacks.

Disturbing videos believed to have been recorded in captivity have since gone viral on social media, intensifying public anger and concern across the country.

In one emotional clip, Mrs. Alamu appealed directly to the Federal Government, Oyo State Government, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and Nigerians to urgently intervene and secure their release.

Another heartbreaking video showed a nursing mother crying and pleading for help while surrounded by frightened children in what appeared to be a remote forest location.

Reacting to the incident, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde described the attack as a serious intelligence failure and assured residents that security agencies were working tirelessly to rescue all victims safely.

The governor also stated that the government would not negotiate ransom payments with the kidnappers.

Following the incident, schools in four affected communities were temporarily shut down to prevent further attacks and allow security agencies to intensify operations in the area.

Governor Makinde reportedly held an emergency security meeting with service commanders and heads of security agencies to review rescue efforts and strengthen surveillance across vulnerable communities.

Security operatives, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, Amotekun Corps personnel, and local hunters, have since launched coordinated search-and-rescue missions across forest areas surrounding Oriire LGA.

Amotekun operatives are said to be carrying out aggressive forest combing operations in an effort to track down the kidnappers and rescue the hostages unharmed.

The attack has left parents and residents terrified, with many demanding increased security presence around schools, especially in remote parts of the Southwest.

Community leaders and concerned Nigerians have also renewed calls for urgent reforms to tackle rising insecurity and repeated attacks on educational institutions across the country.

Authorities have urged members of the public to provide useful information that could aid ongoing rescue efforts as investigations continue.

The shocking incident has once again highlighted the growing security challenges facing schools and rural communities in Nigeria, raising fears over the safety of children and educators in vulnerable regions.

More updates are expected as rescue operations continue.
