Italian president,Giorgio Napolitano, has announced his retirement in a resignation letter on Wednesday, Italian officials said.
In December 2014, Napolitano revealed that he may leave office ahead of the 2020 expiration of his term due to ill health.
In 2013, the 89-year-old president agreed to serve a second term to help play a role in resolving parliamentary elections which were deadlocked.
Though the president’s role is mainly a ceremonial one, he has the power to choose a prime minister and dissolve parliament.
