PDP Declared Winner in Rivers

In spite of protests and allegations that elections did not hold in most parts of the state, the PDP has been declared winner of the April 11 governorship election in the Rivers State.

The party’s standard-bearer Nyesom Wike was said to have polled 1,029,102 (87 per cent) of the total votes cast, to beat his closest rival, Dakuku Peterside of the APC, who polled 124,896 (10.65 per cent).

The results were announced on Monday April 13 around 3.15am by Prof. Faraday Osasere Orumwense, the state returning officer.

Meanwhile PDP won all 26 seats in the state House of Assembly while APC won just 1. Six seats are yet to be contested for as a result of violence that marred the polls in the state.

Speaking after the announcement of results, Tele Ikuru, Rivers deputy governor, said he was happy with the outcome of the polls.

On the dwindling fortunes of the PDP at the national level, he said time will tell.

Peterside alongside the APGA and SDP gubernatorial candidates had earlier called for the cancellation of the April 11 election which they described as a sham because of the spate of violence and alleged irregularities that attended it.

Orumwense, while announcing the results in the presence of Gecila Khan, the state REC, maintained that elections took place in the state.
