President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed instruments of accession for six major International Maritime Organisation (IMO) conventions, positioning Nigeria for greater alignment with global maritime standards. This pivotal step enables Nigeria to officially deposit these instruments at the IMO headquarters, marking a milestone in maritime governance.
The signed conventions focus on enhancing maritime safety, security, and environmental protection. They include protocols addressing unlawful acts against offshore platforms, training standards for fishing vessel personnel, pollution intervention on the high seas, liability limitations for maritime claims, passenger safety at sea, and ship recycling practices.
The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) praised the signing as a historic achievement, crediting the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, for facilitating progress after years of delay.
The Minister reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to transforming Nigeria’s maritime sector in line with global standards.
This action underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to positioning Nigeria as a leader in international maritime affairs, strengthening the country’s influence within the IMO and reassuring stakeholders of its readiness to implement best practices.
