A disturbing threat message has surfaced online, allegedly directed at popular activist and social commentator, Verydarkman, warning that the recent violence in Benue State is just the beginning of a larger retaliatory campaign.
In the voice message, a man claims that Fulani herders are striking back after their cattle were reportedly killed and they were forcefully driven out of local communities in Benue. The speaker chillingly warns, “What happened in Benue is just the beginning, and it’s only the first strike,” sparking outrage, fear, and renewed tension across social media platforms.
The alleged threat comes in the wake of ongoing clashes between suspected herdsmen and farming communities in Benue—a region that has long been plagued by violent land and grazing disputes.
Over the years, hundreds have been displaced and killed in these recurring cycles of violence, which human rights organisations have frequently described as ethnic cleansing.
Verydarkman, known for speaking out against injustice and corruption, shared the audio message as a warning to the public and called on security agencies to investigate the threats and take urgent action to protect vulnerable communities.
The message has drawn widespread condemnation, with many Nigerians calling on the federal government and security forces to take immediate steps to prevent further bloodshed.
Critics say the threat reveals a calculated and organised attempt to escalate attacks in the Middle Belt region, which could plunge the country deeper into ethnic and religious violence if left unchecked.
This comes amid growing fears that Nigeria’s fragile peace is under increasing pressure, especially in rural areas where the presence of law enforcement is limited and community self-defense groups are often overwhelmed.
As tension mounts, calls are growing louder for the government to strengthen national security, disarm violent groups, and implement lasting solutions to the farmer-herder crisis that has devastated communities for nearly a decade.
