The circumstances surrounding the death of fast-rising Afrofuji star Destiny Boy, born Afeez Adesina, have been officially clarified following the release of an autopsy report confirming that the 22-year-old died from drug-related medical complications.
According to findings from a consultant anatomic pathologist, the immediate cause of death was aspiration pneumonitis, a severe lung inflammation that occurs when foreign material enters the airway. Toxicology results revealed the presence of Tramadol and Methamphetamine in his system at harmful levels, pointing to substance ingestion as a key contributing factor.
The report, released through the Ogun State Police Command Homicide Section, listed the official date of death as January 17, 2026. Authorities had earlier opened an investigation into the incident, with at least one suspect reportedly arrested as part of preliminary inquiries.
Destiny Boy rose to national prominence in 2019 after his viral cover of Davido’s hit song “If,” quickly establishing himself as a unique voice in Nigeria’s evolving street-pop scene. Blending traditional Fuji sounds with Afrobeats, he built a strong following among young audiences drawn to his energetic performances and raw, relatable style.
Before the release of the autopsy, the singer’s family had disclosed that he had been battling a long-term health condition involving seizures for nearly two years. His mother described the condition locally as “Ogun Oru,” noting that it often left him disoriented. Efforts were reportedly made to seek both medical and traditional treatment, while a viral video showing him in distress had earlier sparked public concern and debate.
The autopsy findings, however, provide medical clarity, linking his death directly to complications arising from substance ingestion, which ultimately led to the fatal lung condition.
The development has triggered widespread reactions across Nigeria’s entertainment industry, with many calling for urgent action on drug abuse awareness, mental health support, and better welfare systems for young and emerging artists navigating the pressures of fame.
