The Lagos State Police Command has uncovered a disturbing and highly deceptive tactic used by a vehicle vandalism syndicate operating across Lagos, involving the modification of a Mercedes-Benz car jack into a weapon-like object that mimics a real firearm.
Briefing journalists at the command headquarters, Lagos Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, demonstrated how suspects transform an ordinary car jack into what appears to be a rifle. According to him, when struck with a spanner, the device produces a loud “cocking” sound, instilling fear in victims and security personnel who mistake it for a real gun.

Investigations revealed that the gang operates by disguising themselves in fake security uniforms and posing as officials on “special assignments.” This strategy enables them to gain access into gated estates, particularly in highbrow areas like Lekki, where they vandalise parked vehicles and steal valuable components.
The syndicate reportedly targets high-end vehicles including Toyota Hilux, Toyota Highlander, Lexus LX 650, and other premium Mercedes-Benz SUVs. Stolen items include vehicle control modules (brain boxes), wiring systems, side mirrors, number plates, and other expensive parts.
Police operatives from the Ilasan Division carried out a targeted operation in the early hours of Wednesday, leading to the arrest of three suspects: Obinna Okeke (28), Emmanuel Anyanwu (38), and Jude Onouha (31), who is believed to be the leader of the group.

Recovered items include the modified car jack, fake security caps branded “Special Force,” spanners, and various stolen vehicle parts.
CP Jimoh issued a strong warning to residents and estate security personnel, urging them to remain vigilant and verify the identity of anyone claiming to be law enforcement or security officials. He stressed that appearances can be misleading, noting that what seems like a firearm could be a cleverly disguised tool.
The arrests are part of an ongoing crackdown by the police on vehicle theft and vandalism syndicates across Lagos State.
The revelation has triggered widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing shock at the ingenuity of the criminals, while others are calling for tighter security protocols in residential estates.
Safety Advisory for Motorists:
