MRA Calls on DSS to Charge Journalist to Court

Media Rights Agenda, MRA, Wednesday, September 24, called on the Department of State Security, DSS, and the Niger State government to immediately charge Tega Oghenedoro, a staff of the Nigerian Television Authority, Asaba, Delta State, to court if they have actionable evidence against him. While condemning the DSS for parading him before the media, rather than take him to a court of law, the non-governmental organization, also deplored his detention without trial five days after his arrest.

Oghenedoro was arrested and detained for allegedly demanding N50 million bribe to suppress a story about Governor Muazu Aliyu of Niger State.  In a statement from Israel Ebije, Aliyu’s spokesperson, Oghenedoro was “using mushroom online platforms to blackmail innocent Nigerians”, adding that “after it became clear that the journalist was out to blackmail officials of government, I issued a statement warning him to refrain from his actions, but because he is greedy, he still insisted.”
