Tensions flared in the Senate on Thursday as former Edo State Governor and serving senator, Adams Oshiomhole, openly challenged Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a heated debate over Nigeria’s escalating insecurity crisis.

The confrontation unfolded during discussions on recent bandit attacks in Oyo and Kwara states, where armed criminals reportedly abducted 49 people and killed a teacher and a toddler, further intensifying concerns about public safety across the country.

According to the senator, lawmakers have continued to debate security challenges while attacks persist across affected communities. He referenced a previous school abduction incident in Kebbi State, alleging that security personnel had been withdrawn shortly before the attack occurred.

Following deliberations, the Senate adopted resolutions condemning the attacks and urging security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the kidnapped victims. Lawmakers also called for the expansion of the Safe School Initiative to improve protection for students and educational institutions in vulnerable areas.

Despite the Senate’s resolutions, reports of additional abductions later emerged, fueling public concern over the effectiveness of existing security measures and government interventions.

The exchange between Oshiomhole and Akpabio quickly gained attention on social media, where many Nigerians expressed frustration over the persistent wave of kidnappings, bandit attacks and violent crimes affecting several parts of the country.

The latest incident adds to growing concerns about insecurity across Nigeria’s North and North-Central regions, where communities continue to face threats from armed groups, kidnappers and violent clashes.

As citizens and stakeholders call for stronger action, attention is expected to remain focused on the government’s security strategy and the implementation of measures aimed at restoring safety in affected communities.
