Residents of Oka Akoko in Ondo State have hailed local hunters and vigilante operatives following the arrest of several suspected armed bandits during a security operation that has generated widespread attention across social media.

The suspects, believed to be involved in criminal activities in the Akoko axis, were apprehended on Thursday during a coordinated operation by indigenous hunters and members of the local security network. Videos circulating online show large crowds gathering around the arrested individuals as they were paraded through parts of the community.

According to local sources, security operatives recovered AK-47 rifles and motorcycles allegedly used by the suspects. The arrested individuals were reportedly handed over to the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, for further investigation.

The operation has attracted significant public attention because of claims by some residents that traditional invocations, known in Yoruba culture as “ofo,” played a role in preventing the suspects from escaping. Eyewitnesses and social media users alleged that the Oluode, the leader of the hunters, performed traditional rites that allegedly immobilized the suspects and their motorcycles.

However, these claims have not been independently verified, and no official security agency has confirmed the reported role of traditional incantations in the arrest. Authorities have yet to release a detailed statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the operation.

The Akoko region has experienced recurring security challenges in recent years, including cases of kidnapping, armed attacks, and clashes linked to criminal groups operating in forested areas. As a result, many communities have increasingly relied on local hunters and vigilante groups to complement the efforts of conventional security agencies.

Residents who witnessed the arrest described the atmosphere as both tense and celebratory, with many praising the hunters for what they viewed as a courageous intervention. On social media, several users referenced the historic Agbekoya movement, describing the operation as evidence of renewed community resistance against insecurity.

As of the time of filing this report, the Ondo State Police Command had not issued an official statement confirming the number of suspects arrested or the quantity of weapons recovered.

The incident has reignited discussions about community-based security initiatives and the role of traditional institutions in tackling crime across Nigeria’s Southwest region.

Investigations are ongoing, and further details are expected from security authorities in the coming days.

This report is based on eyewitness accounts, viral videos, and community sources. Official confirmation of some claims is still awaited.
