Unilag Debate 2014: Social Science Student Wins

A 200Level student of the Faculty of Social Science, Olaitan Zainab today emerged the winner of the 2014 University of Lagos Debate, making her the third Social Science student to win the debate three years in a roll.

Six debaters drawn from the faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Basic Medical Science keenly contested this year’s debate, which took place at the Main Auditorium of the school.

Zainab who came first with 85.6 per cent, spoke against the topic, “The 2015 Election Will Make or Mar Nigeria.” In her argument, the Social Science student articulately submitted that insecurity; ethnicity and the distrust of electoral processes by many Nigerians would likely mar the 2015 election.

The topic, according to the Acting Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Rebekah Soremekun, is apt for this year’s debate because it comes at a time when Nigeria is preparing for the 2015 general election, adding that it will awaken the political consciousness of the students as the general election approaches.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Rahaman Bello while congratulating the winner, said he was satisfied with the quality of preparation of the debaters and that it is one of the unifying events of the school. “The University of Lagos annual debaters competition is setting the pace for those who will represent the school and the country at national and international competitions. The debate is also a unifying event for the University,” Bello said.
