Atlético Madrid have officially completed one of the biggest signings of the winter transfer window, securing Nigerian superstar Ademola Lookman from Atalanta in a blockbuster deal worth up to €40 million.

The Spanish giants confirmed that the 28-year-old forward has signed a long-term contract that will keep him at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano until June 30, 2030, marking a major statement of intent as Diego Simeone’s side push to reclaim domestic and European dominance.

Fresh from winning the 2024 African Footballer of the Year award, Lookman completed his medical at the Vithas-Invictum High-Performance Sports Medicine Centre before finalizing the move at Atlético’s club offices.

“Atlético de Madrid and Atalanta have reached an agreement for the transfer of Ademola Lookman, who has signed a contract until 30 June 2030,” the club announced in an official statement.

The deal includes an initial €35 million fee, with a further €5 million in performance-based add-ons, underlining Atlético’s confidence in one of Europe’s most devastating attackers.

Lookman’s rise to elite status at Atalanta has been nothing short of remarkable. Since arriving in Bergamo in 2022, he recorded 55 goals and 27 assists in over 100 appearances, cementing his place as a Serie A standout. His defining moment came in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final, where he scored a stunning hat-trick to secure the trophy for Atalanta in one of the competition’s most memorable performances.

Blessed with pace, balance, and exceptional dribbling ability, Lookman is a versatile forward who can operate across the front line or as a second striker. Predominantly right-footed, his ability to cut inside, attack space, and deliver in big matches makes him an ideal fit for Simeone’s high-intensity, tactical system.

The Super Eagles star also writes his name into the history books as the first England-born player to feature in the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, and La Liga, following a career path that has included Charlton Athletic, Everton, RB Leipzig, Fulham, and Leicester City.

Despite attracting strong interest from Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahçe, Lookman chose Atlético Madrid, convinced by the club’s winning mentality and ambition to challenge Real Madrid and Barcelona at the summit of La Liga, where Atlético currently sit third.

Speaking after the deal was completed, Lookman said:
